A Letter to the Editor                                                            [Back to home]
Dear Editor,

Every American concerned about the survival of our
country should urge our Senators to vote against the
"Cap and Trade" bill, H.R. 2454.  This monstrosity was
passed Friday, June 26, by a 219-212 vote in the
House.  The vote in Missouri was strictly on party
lines, with our four Democrat Representatives
(Carnahan, Clay, Cleaver, and Skelton) voting "yes",
and the four Republicans (Akin, Blunt, Graves ,
Emerson, and Luetkemeyer) voting "no".  44
Democrats voted "no"; 8 Republicans voted "yes".
Thanks to Representative Emerson!

The economic toll will be enormous if this very bad
legislation is passed into law.  This is not a matter of
debate.  The Wall Street Journal, for one, has called
this "the largest tax increase in history."  The
American public is not in a position to shell out for
higher energy prices and higher taxes, and the
estimates for many American households run into the
thousands of dollars annually.

Adding to the insult was the fact that 300 pages of
amendments, passed through the rules committee
and run off the presses at 3 a.m. that very day, were
being integrated into the 1,000-plus pages of the
legislation, while the bill was being debated.  This
means that absolutely no member of the U.S. House
of Representatives had even read this bill before the
vote--the bill didn't even exist yet.  I saw this exposed
while I watched live debate on C-Span, and it was
nothing short of an affront.  Unread bills must not
become law!

Senator Kit Bond's office number is (202) 224-5721;
Senator Claire McCaskill's office number is (202)
224-6154.  Politely tell the staffers who pick up their
phone that you would like your Senator to vote "no"
on Cap and Trade.

Sincerely,

Pamela K. Grow
